Poetry Workshop Series

Push and pull the boundaries of language to artfully examine and express the beauty, oddity, complexity, serenity, and terrifying magnificence of the natural world.

Push and pull the boundaries of language to artfully examine and express the beauty, oddity, complexity, serenity, and terrifying magnificence of the natural world. This series includes immersive experiences in the gardens, interactive lectures on poetic form and devices, readings featuring a variety of skilled poets, and – of course – guided workshops where students will have the opportunity to share their work and receive feedback. Join instructor, Ares Headley, to learn techniques to improve your writing and revel in the joy and inspiration you can glean from exploring our ecosystems with fellow artists. Poets of any background or skill level welcome. Bring your own lunch. Because workshops are most effective when the group has an established relationship, students are strongly encouraged to take all (or most) of the classes in this series. $29 per course or $105 for the series. A Showcase Event will be held November 5 from 2 – 4pm to Celebrate your accomplishments as a naturalist writer. Poets will perform or display work alongside peers and enjoy snacks and drinks amongst good company as the sun sets over the gardens. Origins & Change | October 8 Nature & Culture | October 15 Self-Discovery & Memories | October 22 Resilience, Community, Ecology | October 29 Showcase Event (Optional) | November 5 About the Instructor: Ares Lysander Headley is a writer, graphic designer, and applied sociologist working as a Public Programs Assistant at Mt Cuba Center. Their interest in the natural world began at a young age while exploring the forests of central Virginia via four-wheeler. They combine lived experience with ecological, sociological, and artistic theory to shed light on the inherent interconnectedness of human and non-human societies.
